Electrical advances in LED Lighting Have Changed the World

Landscape and Exterior Lighting in Allen

The most famous chapel located within Vatican City, and specifically within the Apostolic Palace, the Papal abode, has had an incredible makeover that has introduced the latest LED technology. The LED Lighting have illuminated paintings that have hereto lay within darkened spaces unable to be appreciated for hundreds of years. In dramatic fashion, this LED technical implementation by Master Electricians has changed the very nature of how people are able to interact with the amazing artwork.

The Chapel itself takes its name from Pope Sixtus the IV who had it restore between 1477 and 1480. Most people know of its fame because of the Michelangelo Frescos that the genius painter created within the interior and upon the chapel ceiling. In truth, there were a team of incredible artists that contributed to these frescos that pay particular homage to Christ. All of the painters were from the Renaissance era and include Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturiccio, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and of course Cosimo Roselli.

Over the centuries soot and modern pollution have contributed to the degradation of these incredible masterpieces. Several attempts have been made to restore the work of these famous artists. These projects have met with varying degrees of success. After all the Master painters new so much about the interplay of light upon the amazing graphics they created.

The complications that arose over time contended with tight spaces, changes in seasons, the preservation problems, and simply the ability of the viewer to take in and enjoy the beauty of it all. As a result, several times artificial lighting had been brought in to help curb the problems, and to bring about a more enjoyable experience for all. The 20th century saw the advent of electrical lighting, but not until this past year had the modern revolution provided some measure of success.

Led lighting had been brought into, at last, illuminate the Sistine Chapel that could not have happened before. On October 29th 2014 over 7000 Led lights had been carefully, and tastefully place to illuminate the amazing artwork. When the day came when they finally tossed the switch so much of the incredible Christian depictions were revealed completely for the first time. The amazing promise and miracle of modern technology had at last been made.

Light Emitting Diodes or LED lamp had been created as a product that has been assembled into a lamp and then sold to be used in traditional lighting applications the world over. The product outlives the standard lighting solutions in use today, by a substantial amount. The LEDs typically create color by appropriately mixing the varying colors of red, green, and blue in varying intensities, thereby allowing the creation of any color in the visible spectrum including white light. Overall, the LEDs are commonly controlled through chips and technology and their intensity and coloring can be carefully controlled. This aspect has contributed greatly to the success with the Sistine Chapel’s new lighting.

In early 2013 the project of LED placement had been awarded to OSRAM a Munich based lighting manufacturer empowered with the skills needed to manipulate the new LED based technologies. Wisely, OSRAM partnered with two teams of experts from Pannonian Universtiy

in Hungary, and with the Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya in Spain, and Fabertechnica in Italy.
Actual work began with OSRAM as the Managing coordinator in April 2013 with physical implementation being performed by the electricians of the Vatican’s Servici Technici who performed the installation.

The vision for the project, had been to try and bring to life the actual conditions and lighting that had originally been displayed when Michelangelo and his fellows finished the masterpiece in 1541. Carlo Bogani, executive project director at Osram said the following, “We chose to use cooler color temperatures in order to simulate the display of the frescoes as Michelangelo would have seen them as he worked.

So, the LED luminaire we developed for the project featured red, green, blue, as well as warm white LED light. Its four color channels are independently controlled to allow for fine adjustment of the color temperature between 3,000–4,000K. The chapel would have to be illuminated with LED light at 3,500K, so a sophisticated correction algorithm was developed that integrates the differing color perception of the human eye with various color temperatures into the spectral distribution of the LED light.

One of the factors to success had been that the Chapel had a military component to it that resulted in catwalks being placed some 30 feet into the archways for the guards to utilize. This allowed the lighting’s cabling to be hidden from spectators view as well as allowing the lighting to appear as if it were nothing but natural exterior lighting filtering in. Hence, it has been an unbelievable success.

Local Master Electricians were used as has been indicated, and so much of the commercial electrical work as well had come from the local population. The lighting implementation contract cost $2.2 million to complete which seems like a tremendous amount, but when you take into consideration that overall lighting costs are expected to drop by nearly 90% it will not take long for the savings to be seen. LED technology makes that promise and it can be expected to pan out as time goes on.

This takes us back to the overall effect on the frescos. The lighting takes 70% less power but provides such a perfectly balanced end result that the true magnificence of the art work jumps into view. The team of artists that included Michelangelo were noted for being cutthroats and harsh critiques of each other’s work, but when it came to the Sistine Chapel such drama had been set aside, and now it seems the complete picture has at last revealed itself. They say, that it seems as if the masters have come back and stand over the shoulder of the visitor and ask, “Is the lighting just right, or do we need more or less.” The end product has changed everything.

Barney has come through again. He is truly an electrical wizard! I was doing some demo in my home and came across an electrical issue that was going to be a big job. He was able to take care of it and the price was fair as always.
